Eating with Invisalign: Foods to Avoid With Invisalign

Most people are familiar with how braces can impact what you eat. With metal and wire braces, you must avoid a host of common foods to prevent damaging the braces.

Invisalign is quickly becoming a great alternative for traditional braces because they are discrete and removable.

As more people consider Invisalign, people often wonder about eating with Invisalign.

Are there foods to avoid with Invisalign? What can you not eat with Invisalign?

Here’s what you need to know.

Eating with Invisalign: Foods to Avoid With Invisalign

Invisalign is Removable

While traditional braces are glued to your teeth, Invisalign is not. Invisalign uses clear aligner trays to slowly straighten your teeth over time. While do you need to wear the trays for over 22 hours a day to be effective, you can remove them to eat.

Since Invisalign is removable, it restricts your eating far less than braces. Even crunchy foods that could damage an Invisalign tray can be eaten with the tray removed. Still, there are a few drinks and foods to avoid with Invisalign.

Drinking with Invisalign

You are able to drink liquids while wearing Invisalign. Considering this, you should drink clear, cool liquids.

Drinking hot liquids while wearing the aligner tray can warp its shape, causing the Invisalign to no longer be effective.

Dark liquids can stain the trays. If a liquid is dark enough to stain your shirt (or your teeth!) it can stain the trays. This will make them far more noticeable. Sugar, acidic drinks like soda and juice can also cause tooth decay or aligner damage.

However, you can still drink these liquids. Just make sure to remove the Invisalign first and thoroughly brush before putting your tray back in.

Foods to Avoid with Invisalign

Given that you can remove the aligner tray before eating, you can eat many more foods than you can with braces.

However, sugar, sticky foods, like chewy candy, can stick to your teeth and get trapped under the tray. Staining foods, like berries and carrots, can also stain your trays when you put them back in.

In general, some foods to avoid during Invisalign include:

  • Chewy candy
  • Jawbreakers
  • Jellybeans
  • Gum
  • Hard candy
  • Raw carrots

While you should be mindful of eating these foods during Invisalign treatment, you may still be able to eat them. The key is to remove your trays first and to brush and rinse after eating. Thoroughly brushing your teeth helps remove any food that may stick or stain, and is important for keeping your trays clean and effective.
